Why You Need To Balance Doing Your Own Hair With Seeing A Hairstylist

I’m one of those natural hair bloggers that believe in the balance of doing your own hair and seeing a hairstylist. While I’m here showing you styles and tips, I think you should also find a stylist that you can connect with and trust with your hair. If you’re unsure of how to find the right stylist/salon, click here for some must-haves your stylist should have. Now, let’s get into why you should see a stylist in addition to doing your own hair.

You May Not Be Great At Everything

I aim to see a stylist at 2-3 times a year to do the things I can’t and don’t want to do, like trim my hair. To be honest, I don’t trust myself enough to cut my own hair. I’m afraid I may cut it uneven and cut too much. Y’all I can’t even cut straight on a piece of paper so what I’m not going to do is cut my own hair. I think there’s a lot of misconception within the natural hair community that you have to be able to do everything yourself and that’s not true. Do what you know how to do well. I’m not saying you shouldn’t learn, but if you’re not comfortable or don’t have the time too then that’s okay too.

Make It A Pamper Session

I also think it’s important to be pampered. It’s self-care for me when I get massages, my nails and hair done. When I do my own hair it kind of takes away the pamper aspect of it. It’s something I enjoy doing, but it’s also an extra thing to do and I want a break sometimes, which is okay. Let someone you trust, who has the same love for hair as you do, take care of you.

Get A Professional Opinion For Your Concerns

Let the professionals give you professional advice. I’m here as a resource for you but I’m not a professional nor will I ever claim to be. I’ve gotten questions from people on whether they should color their hair or not and I’m just not comfortable answering that. I always recommend the GOOD squad (aka my supporters) to see a stylist and get a PROFESSIONAL opinion. I think it’s also hard to give that advice through the phone. You have to consider the state your hair is in amongst other things that I think a hairstylist would know best.

Get Insider Info

Lastly, it’s a learning experience. Every time I go see my stylist it’s like an interview session. I like to know what products and techniques they’re using. Remember, they do training classes every so often, on new treatments, methods, etc. Sometimes I use what they say and sometimes I don’t, but I know one thing. I always learn something new.

On The Flip Side

On the flip side, I think it’s important for you to know the basics. Know how to wash your hair, treat it, and style it because I’m also here for saving coins. No one, and I mean NO ONE, has the time nor money do be going to the salon every week for a new style. I also think you and your hair should know each other well because I’m besties with my crown and I’m going to do right by her.

I hope this article was helpful. Let me know in the comments if you see a stylist?
